DIY epoxy kits and professional coatings differ in preparation, thickness, and durability. Here's what professional installation includes, and the cases where a DIY kit makes sense.
Why DIY epoxy kits peel
Walk through any neighborhood and you'll see DIY epoxy floors with bald patches where the tires sit. That failure mode — called hot tire pickup — happens for two reasons:
- Preparation. Kits tell you to acid-etch the concrete with a citric or muriatic wash. Etching roughens the very top of the slab but doesn't remove the weak surface layer or open the pores the way mechanical grinding does. The coating sits on the concrete rather than bonding into it.
- Thickness. Most retail kits are water-based epoxy paint at 2–3 mils of thickness. Commercial systems go on at many times that build. When a hot tire heats a thin coating, it softens and lifts.
What professional installation actually includes
- Diamond grinding the entire slab with industrial machines — the step no DIY kit can replicate, and the biggest single difference in lifespan.
- Crack and pitting repair with structural fillers, plus a moisture check.

When DIY actually makes sense
